Free to Air television is broadcast free from many TV stations and is being adopted by more all the time.

Free to Air stations make their money from enhanced viewing figures which opens up advertising revenues by those new free viewers.

There is no direct charge from the free to air channel provider or any other broadcaster.

All you need is a satellite receiver (set top box) and a satellite dish with the relevant cabling pointed to the free view satellite staion.

You will however, still need to pay for your Television licence.

The only fee you will ever pay is a once off equipment and installation fee, in this case just €229. You will never receive another TV bill again and will benefit by over 100 Television channels and numerous radio channels.

As yet RTE are not broadcasting free to air but you can still pick these channels up with a normal terrestrial aerial.

Free to Air also comes with a free EPG - Electronic Programme Guide which appears live on your television screen via your remote control.

Free-to-air (FTA) television (TV) and radio broadcasts are sent unencrypted and may be received via any suitable receiver. Free-to-view (FTV) is, generally, available without subscription but is encoded and may be restricted geographically. Neither of these are pay-TV, which is an encrypted subscription (or pay-per-view) service. FTA is usually delivered by satellite television, but in various parts of the world with encrypted digital terrestrial television channels it is broadcast on UHF or VHF bands.

Free-to-air is often used for international broadcasting. It is television's equivalent to shortwave radio.
